![]() ![]() Dogsledding is available at Cold Fire Creek which is in BC. There is no dogsledding in the Jasper area. Before walking on the ice in Maligne Canyon on your own, or snowshoeing on any lake, check ice conditions with the Jasper Information Centre. ![]() Have a picnic lunch in the snow (bring tea or hot chocolate in a thermos and warm everyone from the inside out). Go up to Old Fort Point, or drive to Pyramid Lake or Maligne Lake and snowshoe along the lakeshore. Most of the more popular trails in the valley are good for snowshoeing as well as hiking. Several of the local tour companies offer this. With older kids, you might want to go on a canyon crawl at Maligne Canyon. It's not an inexpensive option, but it might appeal to some people. How about a train ride? Sundog Tours and (possibly) Jasper Adventure Centre offer a half-day trip, by VIA Rail through the mountains and into British Columbia, where a van picks you up and brings you back to Jasper. As a "family activity", this would depend on the ages of your kids and how much they like watching scenery go by. The Chaba Theatre often has a family movie running on one of its two screens, and it's cheaper to see a movie in Jasper than in the city. The Valley of the Five Lakes is a good family hike or snowshoe walk, even just to the boardwalk.ĭuring the holiday season, take the kids and go for an after-dinner walk around town and admire the lights. That hill is also conveniently located if you want to go to the Municipal Pool and have a swim/soak/steam after - there is a water slide, kiddie pool and a fun "apparatus" over the water in the deep end of the main tank. There's a popular hill at the back of town where Pyramid Lake Road leaves town and starts up the Bench the tobogganing run is on the slope between the road itself and the Catholic Church. There are also a number of smaller spots in neighbourhoods - if you are staying in a private home accommodation, ask your hosts where their kids toboggan. The local kids toboggan on the hill in Centennial Park (there is a good playground there too), on Maligne Avenue. The trail is level and the loop about 3 km around it's a very pleasant area of open montane forest. You can cross-country ski (nordic skiing) a groomed trail around Whistler Campground (closed for the winter), just south of town on highway 93, the Icefields Parkway. Walk to the end of the island to see Pyramid Mountain close up. Park at the end of Pyramid Lake Road and walk over the bridge to the island. Pyramid Island is also a fun family outing. The views at Pyramid Lake are also wonderful. There may also be a skating rink cleared on Pyramid Lake, in front of the Coast Pyramid Lake Resort. Take a family portrait by the big fireplace or beside the huge Christmas tree. ![]() You can cross-country ski or walk around the perimeter of the lake (and push a stroller or pull a baby sled) - the views of surrounding mountain ranges are wonderful! JPL usually operates a hot chocolate shack there over the holidays and on some weekends, and you can warm up by the bonfire.If you want to go to the Lodge you can go in and enjoy your hot chocolate afterwards, in the Emerald Lounge in the lobby where the Christmas decorations are amazing. Kids who are beginner skaters often have as much fun playing on the snowbanks as on blades. It is very busy there on weekends and over the Christmas holidays, but never ever feels crowded. JPL clears and maintains an oval (about 1 km around) and several "rinks" on the lake. Here are some ideas for other things that families can do:īring or rent skates and go skating on Mildred Lake at Jasper Park Lodge. The most popular activity for families visiting Jasper in the winter-time is downhill skiing or snowboarding at the nearby Marmot Basin resort, but there are many other things to do as well.
